Week 14 Final presentation of proposal















Now the Hologram base can already be made with the existing technology, the following work is only to update the display mode to improve the experience. For example, remove the tilted transparent board, when the holographic projection technology is mature.

The spoon section now has no mature technology solutions that can be used. But soon there will be available, in this year's CES trade show, there is a Israel company published a portable food analyse product. This means the food detection sensors is maturing.

This device is a new form of human-machine interaction, in the short term will be an interesting thing, although the current technical means can only do a limited interactive experience. In the future, virtual things will be more realistic, in a sense, this can be a challenge or deception for human senses from human technology, ultimately, we can not distinguish between virtual and reality, all of our senses can be simulated by technical means, for example, the simulation of a more physical pleasure than using drugs, but no physical damage to human nerve...

week 13 Reflections

 - What is New Media Art to you?

Initially I know about the concept of New Media was 2008. That was the year I first use iPhone. The gravity sensor and the big screen with capacity touch really shocked me, I never thought that the human-machine interaction could do that. At that time, other mobile operating systems like Windows Mobile or Symbian cannot offer similar user experience, even Android cannot do that before the version 4.0 in 2011. As I understand more and more, I found those forms of interactions in iPhone was already tried by the New Media artists/hackers.  So I think the New Media art is not only an art form, but also a great practical value.



 - What have you learned from this module?

I learned a lot of New Media artists, I saw many different art works. Also I learned how to start to do a New Media art work, and the presentation skills.



 - Will you apply what you have learned from New Media Art module to your own practice?  If so how?

Yes, the module stretched my mind, I will use New Media as an art form if the idea is suitable. And it also helped me in how to start an idea for creating a product.

week 12 Identity, Mouchette, and Bitcoin



Identity is an enduring topic. identity is the conception, qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person or group. With the deepening of globalization, it seems that everyone is losing their sense of identity. The Internet as an important support for Globalization, artist Martine Neddam created website Mouchette.org to discuss the identity issue. Mouchette .org poses as the personal website of a thirteen year old girl. Many people leave feedback on the website or conmmunicated with 'Mouchette' through internet. These   interactive between audience and 'Mouchette' makes Mouchette exist. The identity of Mouchette is based on the relationship of audience and her.

This made me reminds the bitcoin. Supported by the blockchain technology, the bitcoin can be uses as a real currency, The value of bitcoin is secured by the credit of all bitcoin traders. In other words, it's based on everyone who use it. This is very similar to the vietual character Mouchette, the identity of her comes from the relationship, not the government certified ID card.

week 11 hackers



Hack and hacktivism had been a negative word for many years, but similar to the word 'geek', there are some positive meanings in recent years.

Hacker usually refers to  person who with a high degree of understanding of computer science, and programming. In the field of information security, "hacker" means to study how to crack the computer security system. They use public communication networks, such as telephone systems and the Internet, to log on to the system in informal situations and get the authority to control the system. Things became different now, hackers usually not getting profits illegally like crackers. Hackers built things, not crack things. Hack now refers to those who have a great interest in new technologies and create with new technologies.


Because computer science is a lot of manpower and decades of development, hack to do things are built on the basis of predecessors, in the artistic creation point of view, there are a lot of appropriation. This is also a feature of the new media art.

Week 10 Proposal Draft II



This week we further improved our proposal. We considered the details of the device, like the functions of the 3 buttons and what material of the product should be made of. Also did some research of the marketing, and assumed a sales strategy. In this process, I realized how important it is to make a detailed plan because I found there are too much things to do for a such a simple product. And also the presentation skill is very significant, the ability of express our idea clearly is also a big part of the project.

Week 9 VNS Matrix - Cyber feminism




With the development of technology, many work no need much physical demand requirement anymore, which is the weakness of female. Then female can do much more things than before. In old days, people's inherent cognition is that women are not good at working with science and technology. Even the traditional feminism. There are obvious differences between cyber feminism and traditional feminism. First thing is the attitude of science and technology. In the past, for the relationship between gender and technology, feminism mainly adopt the traditional concept of gender opposition, believe science and technology is a reproduction of male temperament, the attitude of science and technology is 'doubt' or 'refuse', and there is a kind of equivalence between 'science' and 'male'.

The cyber feminism conforms the trend of information technology development in the network society, encourage women to use network technology, to be the game-changer of male dominated ideology, use of new media to achieve the goal of equality between men and women. The new open source platform is the new type of human colabration, it is the the product of the age of the Internet. In the field of new technology, programmer as a example, the division of labor between men and women is no longer obvious. Women and men do the same work. Instead of social skills have higher requirements, which is the natural strength of women.


The word Matrix in the name of VNS-Matrix is quite meaningful. At the day we can digitalize everything, include our brain, and all of our memories, and the uterus also has an artificial substitute, physiological difference between male and female may only be a simple preference.

Week 8 VNS Matrix


VNS Matrix was an Australian feminist artist group who were active from 1991 to 1997, by Josephine Starrs, Julianne Pierce, Francesca da Rimini and Virginia Barratt. Their activist practice was concerned primarily with women's role in technology and art, specifically taking issue with "the gendered dominance and control of the new technologies" and exploring, "the construction of social space, identity and sexuality in cyberspace".


They are the origin of cyber feminism. In concept, the cyber feminists believes in cyborg conciousness, they saw the new breakthrough of Feminism with the development of new technology.  Based on my own knowledge, I think they are very sensitive to the new technology, they saw the trend of decentralize, as well as a reduction in male physical demands and an increase in social competence requirements. Especially in 1990's.
